Content Management - authoring your own web pages

One problem that faces anyone operating a web site is how to update the content and make sure the information presented is right up to date. If you pay to have a web site created for you, what happens in 2 months when you wish to change a price or update a staff profile, or load a new image? You either need an ongoing reliance on a developer or you need to be able to control your own content.

This is why a content management system is worth the additional up front cost. Your web site is designed around a page template but content on the page is editable through a word style editor that allows you to rewrite text; add images; add news items; control product databases and prices; add new pages - this list is virtually endless and determined by your requirements.

You will know what elements of your business are subject to regular change and your website can be created to allow you to make those changes. This is either through a pre-defined structured section or by adding/editing text and images freely on a web page.

Pre-defined sections such as news are where all listings have a set of required fields - in this case a date, a headline and the main story text. In another example you might have a staff section with name, phone, email and a photograph. By creating a form that calls for these fields to be completed you can create a new staff member and because of the known structure the system can ensure the quality of the content that is entered. Any content that is not within a structured section is catered for by either editing or adding text and images freely to a web page.

Structured sections are a good idea where they can be identified as they streamline the long term adminstration effort. Within seeit.co.uk we have set up our showcase as a structured system with title, description and screen capture. When we complete our next project, we can easily add it to the site in a matter of minutes and it will automatically be displayed within the showcase slideshow and showcase pages.

Your site will be partnered by an online administration system where you can securely log-in and make the changes you require. This allows you to ensure that your site is always correct and up-to-date and you have no reliance on external resources (although we are happy to be on call for any assistance you might require).

Below is an example of our page editing tool. If you would like to try it out, you can see your own content rendered within the seeit.co.uk page template. Click on 'Preview Your Page' below the editor to view your content when you are ready.
