Google Earth is desktop software that you can download for free and view a virtual model of the world. Using the inbuilt navigation tool you can spin the globe and zoom in on an area of interest. As you zoom in, more and more details is streamed from the internet filling your view of the earth with recent aerial and satellite imagery from that part of the world. You can then supplement your view with data layers such as points of interest, photos, roads, railways, national park boundaries - the list goes on.

Since the XML based data formats for Google Earth are openly published the world has been invited to particpate and there are endless data layers that can be added. Real time cloud cover, paths of hurricanes, the hollywood homes of the stars. You too can publish your data in a compatable format and see your data published on a digital model of the earth.

Google Earth also incorporates height data from the Space Shuttle Radar Topgraphy Mission flown by Nasa. This allows you to take control of the camera and move from a top down view into a 3D virtual world. You can even switch from looking down at the Earth to looking up at the stars. There is also a built in flight simulator for a different way to explore the data.!
