Heat Loss Mapping - a web solution to displaying the results of an aerial thermal survey.
A few years ago we were approached by Aberdeen City Council with a requirement to display the results of an aerial survey undertaken with a thermal camera. The council had contracted an aerial survey
firm to fly over the city with a thermal imaging camera on a cold spring evening to measure the amount of radiated heat on a building by building basis.
Using Ordnance Survey's MasterMap data, the results of the survey were computed to provide an average value for each building. Since MasterMap (Ordnance Survey's most detailed product) contains the building outline
of every structure in the UK, we were able to attach the value of heat loss to each and every building in Aberdeen. We then created a themed map where each building was allocated a colour based on the value of heat loss. Buildings radiating low amounts were shaded blue with a scale of 10 ranges through to red for those with the highest heat loss.
The project was a great success and provided the Council with a tool for asking residents to think about there home from an efficiency perspective. Although Aberdeen were early adopters many local authorities have since followed suit
and we have built several systems for clients up and down the country. We have also built a relationship with Blue Sky, one company who undertake aerial surveys to provide a complete package from survey to web site.
