Databases are the backbone of the Information Technology industry. They provide the means by which the information can be stored in a format whose structure is standardised and compatible with the wealth of IT tools on the market. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is one such tool and is an extension of database technology and in most cases a GIS can read directly from your existing database.

In the current climate web sites with 'static' text are losing favour. Web Sites which interact with databases allow for 'dynamic' content where the user can enjoy a web site customised to their preferences or search against a database and quickly find the information they require. This database may be linked to existing information systems providing up to date information for the web site user.

The design of any database is most often governed by the requirements of the end user. In order to service those requirements it is imperative that the structure of the database consider what information must be stored and the manner in which it should be stored to best service the needs of the end user.

Case Study - Online searchable research tool developed for the Scottish Executive

As part of a larger project See IT developed a database which catalogued the available data sets which had the potential to assist in policy development within certain key aspects of the Scottish Executive's agenda. The database pulled together a number of disparate sources and converted the information to a singular structured entity that could be searched by keywords using internet technologies. The end users could quickly identify the data that is available to assist them in their task. The tool is available to any employee with access to the internet and an authorised username and password.

Administration facilities were provided allowing administrators to access and alter the underlying data using the same web interface. The database is password protected with the degree of access controlled by assigning rights to the indivdual user accounts.
