Analysing your web site use - the who why and where of your visitors.

Once you have your web site up and running you will very likely want to know as much as possbile about who is using your web site and how they are using it so that you can improve your visitor numbers.

There are several different ways of answering these questions. Your web server (the computer that hosts your web site) will likely collect a log file of all requests it serves for your web pages. You can get software that will analyse these web logs and provide you with reports.

There are organisations such as Hitwise who pay the Internet Service Providers for access to their logs on who is surfing which web sites. Access to this information is the most revealing but also very expensive.

By far the easiest and most affordable solution is to use Google Analytics. There is no cost to use this service although you must sign up for an account. You are issued with a code unique to your web site and this must be invisibly embedded on every page. When a page is visited, the google software sends all relevant information from your visitor back to Google Analytics and overnight the statistics are collated and analysed and are available for you to review the next day.

We implement Google Analytics on all of our web sites and can provide traning on how to use the online reporting tools that help you understand the vast number of statistics that are available.
